Overview

What is Surface Cleaning Thinner?

ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner is a professional degreasing and silicone-removing solvent developed to clean surfaces chemically before paint, primer and filler are applied. It dissolves and removes residues of grease, silicone, wax and tar that are not always visible to the eye, as well as fingerprints and sanding dust. It makes surface cleaning – one of the most critical steps in a successful paint job – consistent and reliable.

Silicone and grease residues prevent the paint film from wetting the surface, causing cratering, i.e. the fisheye defects commonly referred to as ‘silicone craters’. By removing these contaminants effectively, ZN-530 minimises this risk and lays the foundation for sound adhesion of the next coat to the substrate. Its balanced evaporation rate allows enough contact time to dissolve dirt, while flashing off without leaving residues on the surface.

For best results, the two-cloth method is used: the surface is wiped with a clean cloth moistened with ZN-530 and, before the solvent evaporates, the dissolved dirt is picked up with a second clean, dry cloth. The product is used before applying fillers – ZN-110 Universal Polyester Filler in particular – the ZN-210 and ZN-220 primers, and basecoat. It is also effective for cleaning bare metal surfaces exposed with ZN-620 Paint Stripper.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Pre-wash

First wash the surface with water and a suitable detergent to remove mud, dust and water-soluble dirt, then allow it to dry completely.

  2. 02

    Wet wipe

Thoroughly moisten a clean, lint-free cloth with ZN-530 and wipe the surface in one direction, working in sections of about half a square metre.

  3. 03

    Dry wipe

Before the solvent evaporates, pick up the dissolved dirt with a second clean, dry cloth, wiping in the same direction. If the solvent is allowed to evaporate, the dirt can redeposit on the surface.

  4. 04

    Repeat at every stage

Repeat the process before and after sanding, and before each application of filler, primer and paint; change soiled cloths frequently.

  5. 05

    Allow to flash off

Allow the solvent to flash off completely before the next application, and do not touch the cleaned surface with bare hands.

Storage and safety

  • Flammable liquid and vapour: keep away from heat, sparks and naked flames; do not smoke in the work area.
  • Store in the original, tightly closed packaging at 5–25 °C in a cool, well-ventilated place.
  • Ensure good ventilation during use; wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection. Collect solvent-soaked cloths in a closed metal container.
  • Refer to the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed safety and disposal information.

Frequently asked

Questions about Surface Cleaning Thinner

Why is it necessary to wipe with two cloths?

When wiping with a single cloth, the dissolved grease and silicone can settle back onto the surface as a thin film as the solvent evaporates. Wiping with a second, dry cloth before the solvent has evaporated ensures that the contaminants are lifted off the surface completely with the cloth.

Can I use it on plastic parts?

It can be used on painted plastic parts. As some types of bare plastic can be sensitive to solvents, test first on a small, hidden area of bare plastic surfaces, and do not let the product remain on the surface for long.

Can acrylic thinner be used for surface cleaning?

This is not recommended. Thinners are designed to adjust paint viscosity; when used for surface cleaning, they may spread grease and silicone across the surface instead of removing them, and can soften some substrates. ZN-530 should be used for pre-paint cleaning.
