Overview

What is 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer?

ZN-220 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer is a premium two-component acrylic primer with a high-solids (HS) content. Because the same quantity of product yields more dry film, it delivers exceptional build and film thickness even in a single coat. This makes it an efficient solution for professional workshops aiming for the same or even better results with fewer coats and less solvent.

The high solids content fills the micro-pores left after filling and sanding, creating a flawless base beneath the topcoat. Excellent flow leaves a smooth film with low orange peel, reducing the need for sanding. Fast drying shortens the time the part spends in the spray booth and oven. The dense, closed film it forms also supports the corrosion resistance of the paint system.

ZN-220 is mixed 5 : 1 by volume with ZN-410 2K Acrylic Primer Hardener and thinned by only 5–10% with ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. On surfaces prepared with ZN-110 Universal Polyester Filler or ZN-130 Soft Finishing Filler, it can be used instead of ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler when higher build and a shorter process time are required. Applying basecoat and ZN-330 2K Acrylic HS Clear Coat on top creates a complete HS system.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Sand filled areas with P180–P240 and the surrounding paintwork with P240–P320. Remove the dust and clean the surface with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Mixing

Mix the primer 5 : 1 by volume with ZN-410 2K Acrylic Primer Hardener and add 5–10% ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. With a high-solids product the correct ratio is critical, so use a mixing ruler.

  3. 03

    Application

Apply 1–2 coats with an HVLP gun fitted with a 1.8–2.0 mm nozzle at approximately 2.0 bar inlet pressure. If applying two coats, allow a 5–10 min flash-off between them.

  4. 04

    Drying

Dry for 2–3 h at 20 °C or for 20–30 min at a part temperature of 60 °C. Drying takes longer at low temperatures and with thick films.

  5. 05

    Sanding

Apply a dry guide coat, then sand dry with P400–P500 or wet with P800–P1000.

  6. 06

    Topcoat

Clean the surface and apply the basecoat; complete the system with ZN-330 2K Acrylic HS Clear Coat.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the original, closed container at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Shelf life in the unopened container is typically 12 months. ZN-410 2K Acrylic Primer Hardener is sensitive to moisture; close its container tightly immediately after use.
  • The product and its vapours are flammable; keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and direct sunlight.
  • Once mixed with hardener, the product contains isocyanates. When spraying, wear suitable respiratory protection (preferably an air-fed mask), gloves and safety glasses; always read the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer

How does it differ from the 4+1 primer?

ZN-220 has a higher solids content, so it is thinned with less thinner and builds a thicker dry film with each coat. The same build is reached in fewer coats, solvent emissions are reduced and drying is faster. ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler, on the other hand, stands out for general-purpose use thanks to its wider thinning range.

Is a single coat enough?

For small repairs and well-prepared surfaces, a single, fully closed coat is often enough. On large filled areas or surfaces with visible sanding marks, we recommend applying two coats, with a 5–10 min flash-off between them.

What should I watch out for in cold weather?

Do not apply when the ambient or part temperature is below 10 °C; below 15 °C, drying takes noticeably longer. Bring the product to room temperature before application and, where possible, bake at 60 °C. Cold product has a higher viscosity, so flow deteriorates and orange peel may increase.
