Thinners

The right viscosity, flawless flow, a clean surface.

Zenova ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner packaging

A thinner for 2K acrylic systems, a blending thinner for invisible transitions in spot repairs and a surface cleaning thinner for use before application.

Thinner is one of the least talked-about components of paint, yet one of those that most affects the result. A thinner with the right evaporation rate prevents orange peel, runs and dulling, and allows the paint to flow out evenly over the surface.

The Zenova thinner series focuses on three core needs: ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner brings 2K paints, clear coats and primers to the ideal spray gun viscosity; ZN-520 Blending (Fade-out) Thinner makes the transition between old and new clear coat invisible in spot repairs; and ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner removes grease, silicone and wax residues before application, minimising the risk of cratering.

Ambient temperature and the size of the area being sprayed are the deciding factors when choosing a thinner. For special conditions, you can get support from our technical team.

  • Balanced evaporation

A controlled transition from flow to drying.

  • Even flow

Reduces the risk of orange peel and dry spray.

  • Invisible blend

Blending thinner leaves no noticeable edges in spot repairs.

  • Clean surface

The first line of defence against cratering caused by silicone and grease.

Thinner selection and evaporation balance

Thinners are solvent blends that dissolve the resin and adjust the spray viscosity. The balance of fast-, medium- and slow-evaporating components in the blend determines how the paint flows out over the surface and how quickly the solvent leaves the film.

Thinner vapours are flammable. Work in a well-ventilated area, away from naked flames and sources of sparks. Environment, health and regulatory guide

  • Viscosity adjustment

The correct thinning ratio regulates droplet size and flow, reducing orange peel and dry spray.

  • Evaporation rate

A thinner that evaporates too quickly seals the surface too early and causes dullness; one that evaporates too slowly leads to sagging and prolonged drying.

  • Blending thinner

Strong solvents melt the clear coat overspray mist into the existing paint, creating a blend zone that leaves no visible edge.

  • Cleaning thinner

A special blend that dissolves grease, silicone and wax and evaporates without leaving any residue on the surface; it is not used for thinning paint.

Frequently asked

Questions about Thinners

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this product group.

Are surface cleaning thinner and acrylic thinner the same thing?

No. Acrylic thinner is formulated for thinning paint, whereas surface cleaning thinner is formulated to remove grease and silicone from the surface before application. They must not be used interchangeably.

How much thinner should I add?

The thinning ratio varies from product to product; it is generally 5–10% for clear coats and 10–20% for primer fillers. Please refer to the relevant product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS) for the exact ratio.

When is blending thinner applied?

It is applied as a thin coat to the blend zone immediately after the clear coat has been applied for a spot repair, while the clear coat is still wet.
