Primers

Adhesion, fill and corrosion resistance combined in a single layer.

Zenova ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler packaging

2K acrylic primer fillers, a 1K fast repair primer, an adhesion promoter for plastic surfaces and a hybrid primer that can be applied wet-on-wet.

Primer is the bridge between the filler and the topcoat. A good primer fills sanding scratches and micro-pores, isolates the layers beneath it and has a direct effect on the flow and gloss of the topcoat.

The Zenova primer series is positioned to meet different workshop needs: the high-build 4+1 and high-solids 5+1 HS acrylic primers create a smooth base for panel repairs; the 1K fast repair primer saves time on spot repairs; the plastic primer provides lasting adhesion on bumpers and exterior trim parts; and Joker Multi-Purpose Primer works in both sanded and wet-on-wet systems, reducing the number of products you need to stock.

Our 2K primers are developed and tested as a system together with ZN-410 2K Acrylic Primer Hardener and ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. Following the mixing ratios and flash-off times is the key to getting the best results.

Chemistry and technology

The chemistry of 2K acrylic primer

In 2K acrylic primers, a hydroxyl-functional acrylic resin (polyol) reacts with an isocyanate hardener to form a cross-linked polyurethane film. While the pigments and fillers fill the sanding scratches, this network structure isolates the underlying layers from the solvent in the topcoat.

The mixed 2K primer contains isocyanates. Use suitable respiratory protection when spraying and read the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Environment, health and regulatory guide

  • Cross-linking

When primer and hardener are combined in the correct ratio by volume (4:1 or 5:1), film hardness, sandability and isolation reach the expected level.

  • Solids content

With HS (high-solids) primers, the same film thickness is reached in fewer coats and less solvent is released into the air.

  • 1K primers

Primers without a hardener dry physically as the solvent evaporates. They are fast, but they do not provide the fill and isolation of a 2K primer.

  • Adhesion on plastics

On low-surface-energy plastics such as PP and PP/EPDM, an adhesion-promoting primer creates the interface to which the paint system can bond.

Frequently asked

Questions about Primers

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about this product group.

What is the difference between 4+1 and 5+1 primer?

The figures refer to the mixing ratio of primer to hardener by volume, which is specific to each formulation. Because 5+1 HS primer has a higher solids content, it gives a thicker film per coat; 4+1 primer is a general-purpose, well-balanced primer filler.

Is plastic primer essential on plastic parts?

On low-surface-energy plastics such as PP and PP/EPDM, an adhesion promoter must be used for the paint to adhere permanently. ZN-240 1K Plastic Primer has been developed for exactly this purpose.

Can 1K primer be used over large filled areas?

1K fast repair primer is ideal for spot repairs, edge sand-throughs and small areas. On large filled surfaces, we recommend using a 2K primer filler.
