Overview

What is 1K Plastic Primer?

ZN-240 1K Plastic Primer is a single-component adhesion promoter developed to create a strong bond between plastic surfaces and the paint system. PP, PP/EPDM and ABS, the plastics widely used for exterior automotive parts, have a low surface energy that makes it difficult for paint to adhere. Applied in a thin, closed coat, ZN-240 provides a reliable base for the adhesion of subsequent layers on these surfaces.

It is designed for bumpers, mirror covers, trim and similar exterior plastic parts. As it needs no hardener, it is used without mixing; after a short flash-off, 2K primer or basecoat can be applied on top. Some plastics, such as PE (polyethylene), can have different surface properties, so on these materials, and on parts whose plastic type cannot be identified, an adhesion test should be carried out on a hidden area before application.

ZN-240 is the first layer of the plastic part painting system. The surface is cleaned with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner; after the flash-off, ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer or ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler is applied to parts that need filling, while flawless new parts can go straight to basecoat. For flexible parts, refer to the Technical Data Sheets (TDS) of the relevant products for the flexibility requirements of the upper coats.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Identifying the plastic

Check the material code on the inside of the part (e.g. >PP<, >PP/EPDM<, >ABS<). On PE or unidentifiable plastics, carry out an adhesion test on a hidden area.

  2. 02

    Cleaning

Wash the part with warm, soapy water and dry it. Then wipe it with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner and immediately wipe it off with a clean, dry cloth to remove mould release agent, grease and silicone residues.

  3. 03

    Scuffing

Scuff the surface with a grey scuff pad or P400 abrasive until all the gloss has gone. Remove the dust and repeat the cleaning.

  4. 04

    Application

Stir the product thoroughly. Apply a single thin, closed coat with an HVLP gun fitted with a 1.2–1.3 mm nozzle at approximately 2.0 bar inlet pressure; avoid heavy coats.

  5. 05

    Flash-off

Allow 10–15 min at 20 °C. Apply the next coat within the maximum time stated in the TDS.

  6. 06

    Next coat

If filling is required, apply ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer or ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler; on flawless surfaces, apply basecoat directly.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the original, closed container at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Shelf life in the unopened container is typically 12 months; close the lid tightly after use.
  • The product and its vapours are flammable; keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and direct sunlight.
  • When spraying, wear suitable respiratory protection, such as a mask with A2/P2 combination filters, as well as gloves and safety glasses; work in a well-ventilated area. Always read the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about 1K Plastic Primer

How can I identify the type of plastic?

Automotive plastic parts usually carry a material code such as >PP<, >PP/EPDM< or >ABS< on the inside. ZN-240 is suitable for all three of these plastics. On other plastics such as PE, or on parts where the code cannot be read, we recommend first carrying out an adhesion test on a hidden area.

Should I also use it on a new, factory-primed bumper?

It is not needed where the factory primer is intact; once these areas have been scuffed and cleaned, you can continue directly with the system. Apply ZN-240 only to areas where the primer has been sanded through and bare plastic is showing.

Can the plastic primer be sanded?

No. ZN-240 forms a very thin adhesion layer that loses its function if sanded. All sanding and scuffing must be done before priming; once the primer has been applied and the flash-off time has elapsed, move straight on to the next coat.
