Overview

What is Soft Finishing Filler?

ZN-130 Soft Finishing Filler is a two-component, ultra-flexible polyester filler developed for thin filling and surface levelling at the final stage of a repair. Its creamy consistency spreads smoothly from the spreader and forms even, thin coats, even on large panels. It fills the small scratches, sanding marks and pinholes left in previous filler coats, bringing the surface to its final pre-paint form.

Its easy-sanding formula lightens the most tiring task of the finishing stage: the filler sands down evenly and with little effort, without clogging the paper. This shortens sanding time, reduces paper consumption and lowers the risk of unwanted dips along the edges. Its flexible structure resists cracking even in thin coats. It is designed for coats of around 1–2 mm; its purpose is not deep filling but a flawless surface.

It is applied as the final coat in repairs where ZN-110 Universal Polyester Filler, ZN-120 Fibreglass Filler or ZN-140 Lightweight Filler has been used for filling. For minor defects, it can also be used directly on sanded existing paintwork. Once dry and sanded, the surface is sealed with ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-220 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer, mixed with ZN-410 2K Acrylic Primer Hardener and ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Sand the underlying filler coat with P120–P150; if working over existing paintwork, also abrade it to a matt finish with P120–P150. Blow off the dust with compressed air and clean the surface with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Mixing

Add 2–3% BPO hardener by weight and mix by folding, without spoiling the creamy texture or trapping air. Continue until the colour is completely uniform.

  3. 03

    Application

On the first pass, press the filler into the surface to fill the pores, then use a wide spreader to apply a thin, even coat of 1–2 mm. Use the mix within 4–6 min.

  4. 04

    Drying

Ready to sand after 20–30 min at 20 °C. Because thin coats generate little curing heat, this can take longer in cold conditions; with short-wave IR it is ready to sand in 3–5 min.

  5. 05

    Sanding

Level with P150–P180 and finish with P240. Dry sand and use a guide coat to identify any remaining defects.

  6. 06

    Priming

Clean the surface and apply ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-220 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the closed original packaging at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Shelf life in unopened packaging is typically 12 months; close opened tins tightly after use.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, heat and naked flames. The BPO hardener paste contains organic peroxide: protect it from heat and never dip a spreader contaminated with hardener into the filler tin.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area when mixing and sanding; wear gloves, safety goggles and at least an FFP2 dust mask. Always consult the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about Soft Finishing Filler

Can I use soft filler for thick filling?

This is not recommended. ZN-130 is designed for thin coats of 1–2 mm and a perfect surface finish. For deeper damage, fill first with ZN-110 Universal Polyester Filler, ZN-120 Fibreglass Filler or ZN-140 Lightweight Filler, and use ZN-130 only as the final levelling coat.

How can I prevent pinholes showing after priming?

Mix the filler by folding rather than whipping, and apply the first pass with firm pressure on the spreader so that the underlying pores are completely filled. Keep coats thin and inspect the surface with a guide coat after sanding. Fill any remaining holes with a thin coat of ZN-130 before priming.

What should I check if the paper clogs during sanding?

Clogging usually indicates that the filler has not yet fully hardened or that too little hardener was added. Keep the hardener ratio within 2–3% by weight and wait at least 20–30 min at 20 °C before you start sanding; in cold conditions, extend this time or use IR drying.
