Overview

What is Acrylic Thinner?

ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner is a carefully balanced solvent blend developed to adjust the viscosity of 2K acrylic paint, clear coat and primer systems to the ideal spraying level. Within the Zenova system, it is used to thin the ZN-310, ZN-320 and ZN-330 clear coats as well as the ZN-210, ZN-220 and ZN-250 acrylic primers. Added in the correct proportion, it improves atomisation of the mix and ensures that the material leaving the gun flows out on the surface in a controlled way.

Its carefully balanced evaporation rate keeps the sprayed film open long enough to flow out evenly and then dry in a controlled way. This balance reduces orange peel and dry spray (overspray dust), providing uniform flow without increasing the risk of runs. Its solvent composition has been selected for compatibility with 2K acrylic resins, preserving the gloss of the clear coat and the filling performance of the primer.

The addition rate depends on the product being thinned: for clear coats, 5–10% for ZN-310, 10% for ZN-320 and 0–5% for ZN-330; for primers, 10–20% for ZN-210, 5–10% for ZN-220 and 10% for ZN-250 (25–30% in a wet-on-wet system). ZN-510 is balanced for standard workshop conditions of around 20 °C. In hot weather it is common practice to choose a slower-evaporating thinner; for the best choice for your conditions, please consult the Zenova technical support team.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Determine the ratio

Check the recommended ratio for the product to be thinned: for clear coats, 5–10% for ZN-310, 10% for ZN-320 and 0–5% for ZN-330; for primers, 10–20% for ZN-210, 5–10% for ZN-220 and 10% for ZN-250 (25–30% wet-on-wet).

  2. 02

    Add the hardener first

Add the thinner only after mixing the base component and hardener in the correct ratio. Using a graduated mixing cup improves the accuracy of the ratios.

  3. 03

    Mix and check

Stir until the mixture is homogeneous. If necessary, measure the viscosity with a DIN 4 flow cup and adjust it to the value given in the product's technical data.

  4. 04

    Assess the conditions

If the ambient temperature is above 25 °C or large surfaces are being painted, review your evaporation-rate requirements with the Zenova technical support team.

  5. 05

    Close the container

Close the container tightly after use; thinner left open evaporates, absorbs moisture and loses performance.

Storage and safety

  • Flammable liquid and vapour: keep away from heat, sparks, naked flames and hot surfaces; do not smoke in the work area.
  • Store in the original, tightly closed packaging at 5–25 °C in a cool, well-ventilated place.
  • Avoid breathing the vapour; ensure adequate ventilation and wear suitable respiratory protection, gloves and eye protection.
  • Refer to the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed safety and disposal information.

Frequently asked

Questions about Acrylic Thinner

Can I use cellulose (nitro) thinner instead of acrylic thinner?

This is not recommended. Cellulose thinners may contain components that can react with the isocyanate hardener in 2K systems, which can adversely affect drying, gloss and durability. ZN-510 should be used with 2K acrylic products.

What happens if I add too much thinner?

Over-thinning reduces film thickness, lowers filling and hiding power and increases the risk of runs on vertical surfaces; with clear coats, gloss and depth may also suffer. Stay within the recommended ratio and, if necessary, check the viscosity with a DIN 4 flow cup.

Which thinner should I use in hot weather?

ZN-510 is balanced for standard workshop conditions of around 20 °C. In hot weather it is common practice to choose a slower-evaporating thinner so that the paint can flow out sufficiently. For the best solution for your conditions, please consult the Zenova technical support team.
