Overview

What is Lightweight Filler?

ZN-140 Lightweight Filler is a two-component filler that uses microspheres as its filling agent, which makes it much lighter by volume than standard polyester fillers. Because less mass is needed to fill the same volume, it adds no extra weight to the vehicle in large-area repairs. As it can be used as both a filling and a finishing filler, it allows fast, efficient work on large areas with a single product.

Microsphere technology helps prevent the filler from shrinking and sinking after curing, reducing the risk of repair marks showing through after painting. Its easy-spreading consistency makes it easy to achieve perfect contours on panel lines and curves. It has a silky feel when sanded and shapes quickly without clogging the paper. These properties save time and labour, especially on large surfaces such as bonnets, roofs and side panels.

On large, shallow damage, ZN-140 can handle both filling and finishing on its own. On surfaces with a low tolerance for imperfections, it can be completed with ZN-130 Soft Finishing Filler for final levelling; for damage that needs reinforcement, such as holes and tears, ZN-120 Fibreglass Filler should be used first. After sanding, the surface is primed with ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-220 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Sand the repair area with P80 and feather the paint edges with P120–P150. Remove grease and silicone from the surface with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Mixing

Add the hardener at 2–3% by weight. Because of the lightweight formulation, a given weight of filler occupies a larger volume, so set the ratio by weight rather than by eye, and mix without trapping air.

  3. 03

    Application

Press the first coat on thinly, then build up the fill with a wide spreader at no more than 5 mm per coat. Apply the final coat thin and even for finishing.

  4. 04

    Drying

Ready to sand after 20–30 min at 20 °C, or after 3–5 min with short-wave IR. Curing takes longer at low temperatures.

  5. 05

    Sanding

Shape with P80–P120 and finish with P180–P240. Dry sand; on large surfaces, using a sanding block keeps the panel true.

  6. 06

    Priming

Apply ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-220 5+1 HS Acrylic Primer to the cleaned surface.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the closed original packaging at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Shelf life in unopened packaging is typically 12 months; close opened tins tightly after use.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, heat and naked flames. The BPO hardener paste contains organic peroxide: protect it from heat and never dip a spreader contaminated with hardener into the filler tin.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area when mixing and sanding; wear gloves, safety goggles and at least an FFP2 dust mask. Always consult the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about Lightweight Filler

How much lighter is it than standard filler?

Standard polyester fillers typically have a density of 1.7–1.9 g/cm³, whereas ZN-140 has a density of approx. 1.1–1.3 g/cm³. It adds significantly less weight when filling the same volume – a difference that becomes especially important in large-area repairs.

Does lightweight filler need a separate finishing filler?

In most repairs, no: ZN-140 can be used as both a filling and a finishing filler. For applications with a low tolerance for imperfections, such as dark and metallic colours, a thin coat of ZN-130 Soft Finishing Filler can be added for final levelling.

How should I dose the hardener?

The ratio is always 2–3% by weight. Because lightweight filler occupies a larger volume for the same weight, users accustomed to standard filler may add too much hardener when judging by eye. This shortens the pot life and can cause staining; use a small set of scales wherever possible.
