Overview

What is 2K Acrylic Hardener?

ZN-420 2K Acrylic Hardener is a general-purpose, aliphatic isocyanate-based hardener developed for standard 2K acrylic paint and clear coat systems. In the Zenova system it is paired with ZN-310 2K Acrylic Clear Coat and used at a ratio of 2 : 1 by volume. It reacts with the acrylic resin to turn the liquid mixture into a hard, glossy, durable polyurethane film, allowing the protective properties of the clear coat to develop fully.

Its balanced reactivity offers a practical compromise between pot life and drying speed: the mixture stays usable long enough for comfortable application, while the film becomes dust-free within a reasonable time. The fully cured surface is highly resistant to fuel, oil, road grime and washing chemicals. Its aliphatic structure helps to retain gloss and colour shade in exterior conditions.

ZN-420 is added at a ratio of 1 part hardener to 2 parts ZN-310 by volume, and the mix is then thinned with 5–10% ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. For ZN-320 MS and ZN-330 HS clear coats, ZN-430 and ZN-440 should be used respectively. Before using it with a different 2K acrylic paint system, we recommend consulting the Zenova technical support team about compatibility. The correct mixing ratio directly determines the final hardness and durability of the clear coat.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Preparation

Stir the ZN-310 thoroughly in its tin. Before opening the hardener tin, clean around the lid to prevent dust and moisture from getting in.

  2. 02

    Measuring

In a graduated mixing cup, add 1 part by volume of ZN-420 to 2 parts of ZN-310; never measure by eye.

  3. 03

    Thinning and mixing

Add 5–10% ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner, stir until the mixture is uniform and strain it into the spray gun.

  4. 04

    Use within the pot life

Apply the mixture within approximately 2 h at 20 °C; this time is shorter in hot conditions. Do not store leftover mixture in a closed container.

  5. 05

    Closing the container

Immediately after use, wipe the rim of the tin and close the lid tightly. Make sure opened containers are used up within a short time.

Storage and safety

  • Reacts with moisture: close the lid tightly after each use; do not use product that has turned cloudy or gelled.
  • Store in the original container at 5–25 °C in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight.
  • Flammable liquid: keep away from heat, sparks and open flames; ventilate the area of use well.
  • Contains isocyanates; may cause an allergic reaction. Wear suitable respiratory protection, chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection; refer to the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.

Frequently asked

Questions about 2K Acrylic Hardener

Can I use ZN-420 with ZN-320 MS clear coat?

This is not recommended. The flow and drying balance of ZN-320 is set to give the best results with ZN-430 2K MS Hardener. Using the matching hardener for each clear coat is the safest way to achieve the intended gloss and durability.

Should I increase the hardener ratio in cold weather?

No. The mixing ratio is not adjusted for the ambient temperature; excess hardener can make the film brittle. Drying takes longer in cold conditions; make sure the ambient and surface temperatures are at least 15 °C and use oven or IR drying if necessary.

How long can I use hardener once it has been opened?

Humid air enters the container every time it is opened. Product whose lid is closed tightly after each use stays in good condition for longer; even so, we recommend using up opened containers within a short time and checking that the hardener is clear before use.
