Overview

What is 2K Acrylic Clear Coat?

ZN-310 2K Acrylic Clear Coat is a standard two-component acrylic polyurethane clear coat developed for automotive refinishing and industrial metal surfaces. It forms a transparent, durable protective layer over the basecoat, giving the colour depth and protecting the surface against the wear and tear of everyday use. With its straightforward 2 : 1 mixing ratio and predictable application behaviour, it is a reliable choice for both day-to-day repair work and industrial painting.

Its formula offers strong UV protection, delaying sun-induced dulling and colour fading of the underlying basecoat and helping to preserve the gloss for longer. The cured film is highly resistant to fuel splashes, road grime, bird droppings and washing chemicals. Fast dust-free drying shortens waiting time in the booth; after 30 min of drying at 60 °C object temperature, the part is ready for assembly once it has cooled and, if necessary, for light polishing.

ZN-310 is mixed 2 : 1 by volume with ZN-420 2K Acrylic Hardener and brought to application viscosity with 5–10% ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. In a typical repair system, it is applied as the topcoat over a surface prepared with ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler and then coated with basecoat. It is recommended to degrease the surface with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner at the start of the system and, on spot repairs, to melt in the blend edge with ZN-520 Blending (Fade-out) Thinner.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Wait for the basecoat to complete the flash-off specified in its technical data (until it turns matt) and wipe the surface lightly with a tack cloth. If the clear coat is to be applied directly over existing paintwork, scuff the surface with P800–P1000 and clean it with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Mixing

In a graduated mixing cup, combine 2 parts by volume of ZN-310 with 1 part of ZN-420 hardener, then add 5–10% ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner. Stir until the mixture is uniform and fill the gun through a paint strainer.

  3. 03

    Application

Using an HVLP gun fitted with a 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle at approximately 2.0 bar inlet pressure, apply a medium closed coat followed by a full wet coat. Between coats, wait 5–10 min until the first coat has tacked up slightly; aim for a total dry film thickness of 50–60 µm.

  4. 04

    Drying

Allow a 5–10 min flash-off before baking. Dry the part for 30 min at 60 °C object temperature or leave it for 16 h at 20 °C; low temperatures and high humidity extend the drying time.

  5. 05

    Polishing and equipment cleaning

Once the part has cooled completely, remove minor defects such as dust nibs by fine sanding and polishing. Clean the spray gun and equipment with ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner immediately after use.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the original, tightly closed container at 5–25 °C in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place; protect from direct sunlight.
  • Flammable liquid: keep away from heat, sparks and open flames; ventilate the mixing and application area well.
  • Use the product within its pot life once mixed with hardener; do not store the mixture in a closed container or pour it back into the original container.
  • The mixture contains isocyanates: wear suitable respiratory protection, gloves and eye protection when spraying. Refer to the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed information.

Frequently asked

Questions about 2K Acrylic Clear Coat

Can I use ZN-310 with a different hardener?

This is not recommended. ZN-310 is formulated for use with ZN-420 2K Acrylic Hardener. A different hardener may adversely affect drying time, gloss and chemical resistance.

What should I watch out for when spraying in hot weather?

As the temperature rises, the pot life shortens and the clear coat flashes off faster. Mix only as much as you need and do not spray in direct sunlight. Using a slower-evaporating thinner in hot weather is common practice; contact the Zenova technical support team for advice on the right choice.

When can the clear coat be polished?

Parts dried for 30 min at 60 °C object temperature can be polished once they have cooled completely. When air drying, we recommend waiting at least 16 h at 20 °C, ideally 24 h; this time is longer at low temperatures.
