Overview

What is 1K Fast Repair Primer?

ZN-230 1K Fast Repair Primer is a fast-drying, single-component repair primer used without hardener. As no mixing is required, work can start straight away on small and urgent jobs. It is designed for spot repairs, panel edges, bare metal spots exposed during sanding and quick touch-up work; because only the amount needed is used, material waste is also kept to a minimum.

Thanks to its very short drying time, the repair area is ready for the next step within minutes. Its anti-corrosive formulation protects metal left exposed after sanding or straightening against moisture and oxidation. It forms a thin, even film that provides a good base for adhesion of the primer filler or paint coats that follow. Thinning should be carried out at the ratio stated in the product's Technical Data Sheet (TDS).

ZN-230 is not a substitute for a 2K primer filler on large filled areas; on such surfaces, ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer should be used. It is, however, an ideal intermediate step for protecting bare metal spots before a 2K primer. It is used with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner for surface preparation and with ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner when thinning is required.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Sand the repair area with P240–P320, making sure no rust residue is left on exposed metal spots. Remove the dust and clean the surface with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Before use, stir the product thoroughly so that no sediment remains at the bottom; do not add hardener. If necessary, thin with ZN-510 Acrylic Thinner at the ratio stated in the TDS.

  3. 03

    Application

Apply 1–2 thin coats with an HVLP gun fitted with a 1.3–1.5 mm nozzle at approximately 2.0 bar inlet pressure. Avoid heavy coats; allow the surface to turn matt between coats.

  4. 04

    Drying

Dries in 20–30 min at 20 °C and in approximately 10 min at 60 °C. Low temperatures and high humidity extend the drying time.

  5. 05

    Next coat

On large or filled areas, apply ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler on top. On small spot repairs, you can move on to basecoat after light dry sanding with P400–P500.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the original, closed container at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Shelf life in the unopened container is typically 12 months; close the lid tightly after use.
  • The product and its vapours are flammable; keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and direct sunlight.
  • When spraying, wear suitable respiratory protection, such as a mask with A2/P2 combination filters, as well as gloves and safety glasses; work in a well-ventilated area. Always read the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about 1K Fast Repair Primer

Can it be used on large filled areas?

No. ZN-230 is a thin-film repair primer and does not provide the build and isolation needed on large filled surfaces. On these areas, use ZN-210 4+1 Acrylic Primer Filler or ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer. Choose ZN-230 to protect bare metal spots before applying a 2K primer.

Can basecoat be applied directly on top?

On small spot repairs, usually yes: once the primer is fully dry, sand it lightly dry with P400–P500, clean it and then move on to basecoat. Keeping the film thin prevents the solvent in the upper coats from affecting the primer. On larger areas, however, a 2K primer filler must be applied first.

Why should heavy coats be avoided?

Single-component primers dry as the solvent evaporates. In heavy coats, solvent becomes trapped in the film; this delays drying and can make the primer soft when sanded, as well as causing problems such as blistering or sinkage once the topcoat is applied. For the best results, apply 1–2 thin coats.
