Overview

What is Galva Filler?

ZN-170 Galva Filler is a two-component polyester filler formulated with special resins for galvanised steel and zinc-coated metals. Zinc surfaces make it difficult for standard polyester fillers to adhere, which over time can show up as blistering, edge lifting and flaking. ZN-170 has been developed to provide maximum adhesion on these demanding substrates and also forms a strong bond with aluminium and its alloys.

Its flexible structure tolerates the stresses caused by impact and vibration on thin galvanised panels, reducing the risk of cracking. Its easy-spreading consistency glides on smoothly with a spreader and leaves a smooth surface; once cured, it sands evenly without clogging the paper. As galvanised steel is widely used in the bodies of today's cars, ZN-170 is one of the workshop's essential products for modern vehicle repairs.

ZN-170 is used as the main filler on galvanised panels and aluminium parts; if necessary, a thin coat of ZN-130 Soft Finishing Filler can be applied for final levelling. For priming the bare galvanised and aluminium areas around the filler, ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer, which adheres directly to these substrates, is recommended. For bonnet and roof panels exposed to heat, ZN-160 Aluminium Filler can be considered.

Application

Step-by-step application

The recommended application sequence for a professional result.

  1. 01

    Surface preparation

Remove the paint and abrade the surface with P80–P120 without removing the zinc coating completely. Clean off any white rust (zinc corrosion) and free the surface from grease and dirt with ZN-530 Surface Cleaning Thinner.

  2. 02

    Mixing

Mix with 2–3% BPO hardener by weight, without trapping air, until the colour is uniform.

  3. 03

    Application

Press the first coat firmly onto the substrate to form a thin adhesion coat, then complete the fill at no more than 3 mm per coat. Use the mix within 4–6 min.

  4. 04

    Drying

Ready to sand after 20–30 min at 20 °C, or after 3–5 min with short-wave IR. Curing takes longer at low temperatures.

  5. 05

    Sanding

Shape with P80–P120 and finish with P180–P240. Avoid unnecessarily thinning the zinc coating around the filler.

  6. 06

    Priming

Apply ZN-250 Joker Multi-Purpose Primer, making sure it also covers any bare galvanised and aluminium areas.

Storage and safety

  • Store in the closed original packaging at 5–25 °C in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Shelf life in unopened packaging is typically 12 months; close opened tins tightly after use.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, heat and naked flames. The BPO hardener paste contains organic peroxide: protect it from heat and never dip a spreader contaminated with hardener into the filler tin.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area when mixing and sanding; wear gloves, safety goggles and at least an FFP2 dust mask. Always consult the product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked

Questions about Galva Filler

Why does standard filler lift off galvanised steel?

A zinc coating is a surface to which polyester resins find it hard to adhere. Even if standard filler appears to stick at first, heat, moisture and vibration weaken the bond over time, and edge lifting and flaking can occur. The special resins in ZN-170 have been selected to form a strong, lasting bond with the zinc surface.

Do I need to sand off the zinc coating completely?

No. The aim is to create enough surface roughness for adhesion while preserving the zinc layer that provides corrosion protection. Abrading the surface to a matt finish with P80–P120 is sufficient. Where the zinc has been removed completely and bare steel is exposed, restore corrosion protection with a suitable primer system.

Can it also be used on aluminium parts?

Yes. ZN-170 also adheres strongly to aluminium and its alloys. After sanding the aluminium surface with P80 and cleaning it, we recommend applying the filler promptly, before the oxide layer has a chance to re-form.
